Prep Sports Notebook: Local teams advance in volleyball tournaments
Region 2-AAAA champion Veterans rolled easily over Burke County in the first round of the GHSA Class AAAAA volleyball playoffs Oct. 14.
The Warhawks took game one 10-0, and game two 13-3 to complete the sweep. Veterans continues its march toward Columbus when it hosts Gilmer County on Wednesday.
Gilmer advanced by defeating Arabia Mountain 13-0 and 9-1.
Fourth-seeded Perry battled region 3-AAAA champion Wayne County to the bitter end, but fell 5-4 in a decisive game three on Thursday to conclude its season. The Panthers had won game one 4-1, before dropping game two 2-1.
Houston County reached the second round in the Class AAAAA playoffs by sweeping South Effingham by finals of 9-1 and 12-3.
The Bears will play at home again this week against River Ridge, who knocked out Region 6-AAAAA champion Dunwoody in three games.
Richmond Hill ended fourth-seeded Northside's year with a 2-1 win and a 10-2 win on Wednesdary.
The Trojans of Peach County are also still alive in Class AAA after dominating Hephzibah 12-5 and 16-1 to complete the sweep in its opening round series.
Peach County will travel to face region 7-AAA champion Franklin County, who outlasted Adairsville in three games.
VETERANS' LAWSON MAKES ARIZONA STATE TEAM
Former Veterans basketball player Shazier Lawson was announced as a member of the Arizona State Sun Devils recently after earning a spot on the team as a walk-on.
Lawson is a 2015 graduate of Veterans. He averaged 12 points per game as a senior for the Warhawks.
Arizona State finished 18-16 last season, tying for fifth place in the Pac-12.
Lawson will play for former Duke great and first-year head coach Bobby Hurley. Hurley took over for former head coach Herb Sendek, who was let go at the end of the season.
