Eagles sitting pretty after win against Demons
After the biggest weekend of the season to date in GHSA region 2-AAAAA, the Northside Eagles took a big step toward the defense of its region title.
The No. 1 ranked Eagles (7-0, 6-0 Region 2-AAAAA) dominated Warner Robins (5-2, 4-2 Region 2-AAAAA) in all facets of the football game and came away with a historic 58-14 win over the Demons. The victory was the largest point total for either team in the 58-year history of the rivalry, and the 44 margin of victory equaled the biggest win for either team in the series.
Starting quarterback Tobias Oliver and tailback Desean Dinkins combined to rush for 289-yards on 31 carries for the Eagles, who finished the game with 463 rushing yards as a team.
Despite the loss, Warner Robins still controls its own playoff destiny. The Demons will play a pair of huge games the next two weeks against Lakeside and Grovetown, who each sit one game behind Warner Robins in the standings at 3-3.
Northside now sits alone in first place after Houston County (6-1, 5-1 Region 2-AAAAA) dropped a heart-breaking 24-17 battle on the road at Jones County (6-1, 5-1 Region 2-AAAAA).
The Bears led 10-7 at the half, but found themselves trailing 17-10 early in the fourth quarter until quarterback Jake Fromm found Amari Colbert in the end zone with 3:17 to play to tie the score.
Jones County responded immediately with a 52-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead and set the stage for Fromm to try and lead another late drive to save the Bears.
The Alabama commitment marched Houston County down the field, but his fourth down pass into the end zone was intercepted by the Greyhounds' Terrell Solomon with just seconds remaining.
Houston County will try to keep pace with Jones County and Northside the next two weeks and set up a game with big title implications on Nov. 6 against the Eagles to close out the regular season.
Northside beat Jones County 36-22 on Sept. 17.
