Prep sports notebook: Veterans gets crucial win; Perry stumbles
The Veterans Warhawks picked up a key GHSA region 2-AAAA victory over Baldwin on Friday as they cruised to a 27-7 win in Milledgeville.
After starting last season 0-6 overall and 0-2 in region play, Veterans is 2-3 overall and 1-0 in region play in 2015.
The Warhawks have another big game this Friday when they host defending region champion West Laurens (5-1, 2-0 region 2-AAAA).
Veterans’ rival Perry (1-5, 0-2 region 2-AAAA) battled hard as well last week before falling to the upstart Howard Huskies by a 19-13 final at the Panther Pit. Perry will travel to once-beaten Upson-Lee this week.
Northside, Houston County and Warner Robins are each idle this week after picking up region victories over Augusta-area programs on Friday. The Eagles and Bears won easily, while the Demons came from behind to topple Evans 21-19.
All four playoff teams from a season ago in GHSA region 2-AAAAA will square off in two weeks as Northside battles Warner Robins and Houston County travels to Jones County for a pair of games with serious region championship implications.
Things have maybe not come as easily as Peach County fans have grown to expect to start the 2015 season, but head coach Chad Campbell quietly has his Trojans’ at 5-1 overall and 4-0 in GHSA region 2-AAA.
The Trojans beat Central 25-14 on the road last Friday and will host Kendrick this week, before a big road game against the Jackson Red Devils.
