Prep Sports Notebook: Victories all around on gridiron
For the first time since late in the 2013 season, all seven local high schools celebrated victories on the football field on the same weekend, with four of them coming on the road.
Perry and Veterans each picked up its first win of the season in upset fashion as the Panthers pulled off a big 34-33 triumph over Macon County, while the Warhawks visited Sandersville and knocked off last year’s GHSA Class AAA finalist Washington County 38-21.
Peach County began the defense of its 2014 GHSA Region 2-AAA championship by rolling over Southwest 35-12, and Westfield got back on track after a loss to Valwood by outlasting Deerfield-Windsor 28-25 in a rivalry matchup that could very well be a GISA Class AAA playoff preview.
Northside, Warner Robins and Houston County all moved to 2-0 in GHSA Region 2-AAAAA with expected wins over outmatched opponents from the Augusta side of the region. The Eagles beat Lakeside 30-7, Warner Robins cruised 41-6 against Cross Creek and the Bears took care of Richmond Academy 41-13.
Things will toughen up this week as all four playoff teams from a season ago in Region 2-AAAAA will square off at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Northside will kick off the weekend on Thursday night when they host a Jones County program that is also perfect in region play at 2-0.
The Greyhounds stunned the Eagles last season with a 45-37 win, the only stumble in a Northside campaign that ended with a 14-1 record and a Class AAAAA state championship.
Warner Robins and Houston County will renew their rivalry Friday with the Bears as the home team. Houston County blew open the meeting in 2014 from a five-point game at halftime, to a 62-30 win in which the Bears scored on all of their second half possessions. It was the first time Warner Robins had surrendered 60 points in a game since losing 67-13 to Lanier in 1966.
Peach County hosts a Spencer team coming off two weeks of rest Friday in Fort Valley, while Westfield gets some much needed down time of its own after a tough opening schedule. The Hornets will travel to Statesboro in two weeks to face unbeaten Bulloch Academy.
Perry looks to continue its momentum against Brooks County at the Panther Pit, while Veterans head coach David Bruce will once again test his team in non-region play with a tough road game at Valdosta.
