Prep Sports Notebook: Houston County High softball coach Angela Crawford gets 200th career win

Head softball coach Angela Crawford of Houston County High School won her 200th career game Aug. 14 in a 6-5 victory over Colquitt County.

Crawford is in her eighth season as head coach of the Bears and enjoyed her best campaign in 2009 as she led Houston County High to a state runner-up finish in GHSA Class-AAAAA.

She has sent numerous players to the collegiate ranks, including Kourtny Thomas, who was the 2009 Middle Georgia Player of the Year, and went on to finish her career at Georgia Southern as the second most prolific home run hitter in program history.

EAGLES GET DRAMATIC WIN AS FOOTBALL BEGINS

Northside, Perry and Westfield got a head start on the rest of the teams in the area as they kicked off their 2015 football seasons with games Friday.

The Eagles trailed 24-6 at the half of their game against North Cobb before storming back for a 27-24 win as quarterback Tobias Oliver found Treyvon Willis in the end zone with 21 seconds to play. The victory didn’t come without cost as Northside lost defensive leader Chris Haughton for the season after he suffered a broken femur returning a kickoff at the end of the opening half.

Westfield began its quest for a third consecutive GISA Class-AAA championship with a 47-14 win over Southland. The Hornets scored 33 unanswered points to pull away as their prolific rushing attack finished with 261 yards on 33 carries.

Perry couldn’t overcome costly mistakes and fell 11-0 at home to Monroe-Albany in head coach Carl Dixon’s debut for the Panthers. Perry surrendered two safeties in the opening half on snaps over the punter’s head that sailed through the end zone. But Perry found itself within striking distance late as it trailed just 4-0 in the fourth quarter.

Veterans and Houston County High will open their seasons against one another Thursday at McConnell-Talbert Stadium, while Warner Robins and Peach County will renew acquaintances in Fort Valley on Friday.
