WR High preparing for annual Demon Dress Drive
Every year, Warner Robins High School hosts the Demon Dress Drive, a fundraiser that helps provide young women with beautiful dresses at a more affordable cost.
The premise for the Demon Dress Drive is simple. Dresses suitable for a formal event like the prom are donated. The student council, which hosts the Demon Dress Drive, holds a sale of the dresses at very reasonable, affordable prices with the proceeds from the sale going to charity. About 200 dresses are available at the sale every year. The Demon Dress Drive has always been open to anyone in the community.
This year, there will be at least 80 dresses from Sharing Elegance, the prom and pageant dress store located in Henderson.
Grace Vinson, who owns Sharing Elegance, was thrilled about the opportunity to donate to the Demon Dress Drive.
“We are here in Henderson but that’s Houston County. We know the money raised will go to a good cause that benefits women and children.” Vinson said.
The dresses being donated are last year’s as Vinson makes room for the 2,500 dresses that she will have for the coming 2015 prom, pageant and ball season.
Vinson purchased Sharing Elegance in 2013 after longtime owner Betty Hammock died, but Vinson had worked there for 13 years prior to becoming the owner.
“It is very rewarding,” Vinson said. “To be involved in picking out THE dress for any girl. It can be emotional, especially for the mothers. Donating to the Demon Dress Drive is also very rewarding, to be involved in helping a young girl who might not be able to otherwise afford a dress.”
Dresses are being collected now for the 2015 Demon Dress Drive. Gently used formal and bridal wear in all sizes, styles and colors can be dropped off at Warner Robins High School in the office. The donation of a dress is a tax deduction. Organizers ask that the dresses be in good condition, dry cleaned and in a bag.
The Demon Dress Drive sale will be held at Warner Robins High School in the Rockin’ R Café on Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
