Grand jury indicts man in 2012 shooting of then Northside athlete

A Warner Robins man has been indicted in a 2012 shooting that injured a Northside High School football player.

Andre Lavar Slocumb, 30, was indicted Tuesday by a Houston County grand jury on aggravated assault and aggravated battery charges for allegedly shooting Austin Roberts in the side with a firearm Sept. 2, 2012, at a neighborhood gathering in Warner Robins.

Roberts, a senior defensive end at the time of the shooting, was treated and released from the Medical Center, Navicent Health, in Macon the same day.

Slocumb also was indicted on another charge of aggravated assault for firing shots at another person and for discharging his firearm into the vehicle of a third person, according to the indictment.

Slocumb was arrested this past Feb. 16 in connection with the shooting and remained jailed Wednesday without bond, according to online jail records.

On Sept. 2, 2012, Northside head football Coach Kevin Kinsler and his staff were at their regular Sunday meeting when a call came in about 6:30 p.m. that Roberts had been injured in a shooting.

Kinsler said then that his information was sketchy, but it was his understanding that Roberts was at a gathering that turned confrontational. Roberts was initially thought to have been shot in the back, Kinsler said.

Roberts was a Telegraph All-Middle Georgia selection for the 2011 season. He was a preseason All-Middle Georgia selection in 2012.
