Byron police pickup involved in crash on Ga. 96

The Houston County Sheriff's Office is investigating a two-vehicle Wednesday morning crash between a car and a Byron police pickup towing an enclosed cargo trailer.

The driver of the car was taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health in Macon after the 10:40 a.m. crash on Ga. 96 near the Twiggs County line, said Houston County sheriff's Capt. Ronnie Harlowe.

The extent of the driver's injuries was not known, but they were not thought to be life threatening, Harlowe said. A young child riding in the car's back seat was not hurt, he said.

Byron police Lt. Brian Hunter, the pickup's driver, was checked as a precaution at the Peach Regional Medical Center, Police Chief Wesley Cannon said.

The pickup was pulling the agency's driver education safety trailer to Middle Georgia State University's Cochran campus for a demonstration. The pickup and trailer likely will be totaled by the insurance company, Cannon said.

"My first concern is for the parties involved and their health," Cannon said. "Everything else can be replaced."

The crash closed eastbound and westbound lanes on Ga. 96 just east of Old Hawkinsville Road for several hours.
