Dublin man dies from injuries from crash on Ga. 96

A Dublin man has died from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on Ga. 96 near the Twiggs County line.

The victim was identified by authorities as Steven Wayne Smith, 26.

Smith was the driver of one of two pickups involved in the 4:06 p.m. crash with an 18-wheeler Thursday, said Houston County sheriff's Capt. Ronnie Harlowe.

Authorities had said that Smith was being airlifted to the Medical Center, Navicent Health. But he was taken by ambulance, Harlowe said Friday.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was also taken by ambulance to the Medical Center, where he was treated and released, Harlowe said. The third person involved in the crash, the driver of the second pickup, was not hurt.

The 18-wheeler had gone off the narrow, two-lane roadway after the crash with a full load, Harlowe said. The road was closed from Old Hawkinsville Road to the Twiggs County line until 2 a.m., he said.

The crash remains under investigation.
