Standoff in south Houston County ends peacefully

A two-hour standoff ended peacefully Friday when Houston County sheriff's deputies were able to coax from his home an intoxicated man with a loaded firearm.

The incident in the 100 block of Story Road, off Ga. 247 in the south end of county, started at 9:20 a.m. when deputies responded to a domestic dispute in which a husband and wife had gotten into an argument, said sheriff's Capt. Ronnie Harlowe, who heads the office's patrol division.

The wife told arriving deputies that her husband was intoxicated and had a loaded gun, Harlowe said. At no time was the wife held hostage, and no shots were fired during the incident, he said.

The man surrendered to authorities about 11:20 a.m., Harlowe said.

He was taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
