Macon County siblings killed in Peach County crash

A brother and sister are dead after a two-vehicle crash Wednesday on Ga. 96 in Peach County.

Eric McGhee and Karen McGhee, both 58, of Macon County, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Ga. 96 just east of Lane Southern Orchards, said Peach County Coroner Kerry Rooks. Both previously resided in Fort Valley, Rooks said.

Eric McGhee was driving east on Ga. 96 in a heavy rain just before noon as he neared a curve, said Peach County Sheriff Terry Deese.

"Because of the heavy water on the roadway, it caused him to hydroplane," Deese said. "The vehicle got sideways and went into the left-bound lane and a SUV traveling west hit him pretty much broadside."

The driver of the sports utility vehicle and two passengers in that vehicle were taken to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, with injuries that were not thought to be life threatening, Deese said.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the crash, Deese said.
