Houston expands water system

WARNER ROBINS -- About two dozen homes on Scott and Kersey roads in Houston County will soon be able to connect to the county water system.

The Houston County Commission voted Tuesday to award a contract to extend water services along about 13,000 feet of the two connecting roads. Complete Sitework Services of Dublin was the low bidder at $274,241 and was awarded the contract.

Operations Director Robbie Dunbar said he expects the work will begin in January and should take about three months.

The expansion is part of an ongoing effort to extend county water services using special local option sales tax funds. Dunbar said residents do not have to connect to the service. Many often do not at first but participation tends to grow as people have trouble with wells that require large expenditures.

However, all of the residents in the expansion will benefit because it will include fire hydrants and will lower insurance premiums, Dunbar said.

Also at the meeting the board voted to name Commissioner Jay Walker to serve as vice chairman in the coming year.
