Warner Robins police conducting safety checkpoints overnight Friday

Warner Robins police are expected to be out in force overnight Friday as part of an effort to deter impaired driving.

Police plan to set up safety checkpoints and to station officers around those checkpoints, according to a Warner Robins police news release.

The "Operation Safe Streets" effort is from 7 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The effort is part of the Georgia Governor's Office of Highway Safety's Zero Tolerance campaign aimed at making the streets safer this holiday season.

For the first half of the year, the department reported a total of 662 traffic fatalities through June, up by 114 deaths from the first half of last year, the release said.
