Perry planning commission votes to demolish historic downtown home

The Perry Planning Commission voted unanimously to demolish a historic house on First Street at the request of the First Baptist Church.

The church recently acquired the property where the Colonial Revival-style house sits at 1007 First St.

The house, built in 1937, was deemed to have historically significant value in the Georgia Historic Resources Survey conducted in 2002 by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

In February, the planning commission approved the church's request to move the house from the property.

Three people offered to move the house, but "all three of them have backed out," church member Jim Langston told the Perry Main Street Design Committee in September.

The committee was split 3-3 in its recommendation to the planning commission.

The planning commission voted 5-0 on Monday to demolish the building. Members Jacob Poole and Patricia Jefferson were absent.
