Fort Valley State University student killed in crash

A Fort Valley State University student was killed in a single-vehicle crash early Thursday near the university’s campus.

Taylor Moore, 22, a senior mass communications major, failed to negotiate a curve on Carver Drive, which caused her vehicle to leave the roadway, overturn and crash into a tree, said Peach County Coroner Kerry Rooks.

Moore’s automobile was discovered shortly before 7 a.m., Rooks said. She was last seen about 2 a.m., Rooks said.

Moore, of Powder Springs, was a member of the Alpha Beta Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., according to a post on FVSU’s Facebook page.

“We are devastated by this loss as the death of any member of Fort Valley State’s community impacts us all,” Jessica Bailey, FVSU interim president, wrote in the post. “On behalf of the campus community, we offer our sincerest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time.”

The university provided grief counseling Friday, according to the post.

Also, FVSU is holding a memorial service for Moore at 4 p.m. Thursday in the C.W. Pettigrew Center, which will be followed by a candle-lighting ceremony along the Wildcat Plaza near the Greek Walk, according to a FVSU news release.

In lieu of flowers, the university is asking for donations to be made to the Go Fund Me account that Moore’s family has set up to help defray funeral costs, the news release stated. To donate, go to http://www.gofundme.com/gs3e5mzk.
