Several Peach County students involved in morning bus crash. What we know
Eleven high school students sustained minor injuries after the Peach County Schools they were riding in was involved in a collision, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The bus was carrying 14 students when the accident happened at 6:16 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 96 and Buckeye Road, said Cpt. Crystal Zion, the Georgia Department of Public Safety’s information director for GSP.
At least six students were admitted to the hospital following the bus crash, with no extensive injuries reported as of Monday afternoon, said Marla Sellers, Peach County Schools spokesperson.
“So far, no one was injured, and from what I understand, the bus driver is okay,” Sellers told The Telegraph at the time.
A black Dodge Durango was traveling east on GA-96 while the school bus was traveling north on Buckeye Road, officials said.
“The bus stopped at the stop sign on Buckeye Road at the intersection of GA-96,” Zion said in a statement. “The driver of the bus attempted to make a left turn, traveling into the pathway of the Dodge Durango. The Durango struck the school bus on the driver’s side.”
The driver of the Durango was transported to the Atrium Health Navicent in Byron, according to Zion.
Sellers said the high school students’ parents took them to the hospital.
Troop H’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team was contacted to determine the speed of the Durango at the time of the crash, Zion said.
Sellers said the Fort Valley Police Department arrived on the scene of the incident Monday morning. The FVPD could not be immediately reached prior to publication.
The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation, according to Sellers.
