The new meat market is owned by Cody and Kallie Durden, their second family owned business in Middle Georgia. Cody, who previously worked in auto sales, runs the market while Kallie, a floral designer, operates their other business, The Flower Co. at 233 Ga. 49 in Byron.

“We’ve been fortunate. We’ve been blessed, “ Cody said. “We’ve have a lot of local support. That’s all we can ask for.”

The market, which strives to stock Georgia-grown products as much as possible, celebrates its first month in business next week.

Here are seven suggestions when visiting Durden’s Prime Meats:

  • Pick up a couple of steaks such as a boneless ribeye or a T-bone steak. Steak options include some dry-aged and prime meats, along with burger options such as Wagyu burgers and jalapeno cheddar burgers.
  • Don’t forget the side dishes such as fresh peas, okra, collards, tomatoes and corn.
  • Want a rack of ribs or a Boston butt to pick up for dinner? With 24-hour notice, they’ll have it ready the next day, along with some sides if desired. Other dinners options also are available.
  • Try an appetizer ready for the grill such as their pork bites. The bites are made with sausage, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, diced jalapenos wrapped in bacon with maple seasoning on top.
  • Add a bag of “Ocmulgee Mudroast,” freshly roasted medium coffee from nearby Pulaski Brewing Company.
  • Grab a bag of lump charcoal from five-time world barbecue champion Myron Mixon of Unadilla. His step-son is baker and cookie artist Cory Jones, owner of Sweet Evelyn’s at 908 Carroll St. in downtown Perry.
  • Need something to pick up for lunch? Check out the store’s Facebook option for the menu of the week. This week’s options include freshly grilled cheeseburgers, a half-rack of ribs and a three-rib plate. Sides include a bag of chips, cowboy beans, coleslaw, pasta salad and smoked mac-n-cheese. Brownies are on the menu for dessert.
