‘Numerous priority violations.’ Houston County bar and its food truck fail inspection
A Houston County bar and its food truck failed their routine health inspection in February but bounced back two days later with a perfect score.
Pub 96 Inc. and Pub 96 Food Truck, 405 Ga. 96, Suite 100, Bonaire, received a “U” for “unsatisfactory compliance” with a score of 64 on Feb. 27, according to what was reported in the Georgia Department of Public Health’s online portal.
The bar and food truck came back with an “A” for “food safety excellence” two days later at its required follow-up inspection with a perfect score of 100.
State health inspectors assign grades based on how many points are deducted from 100, with scores of 69 and below considered failing. Follow-up inspections are required when a restaurant fails its routine inspection and generally take place within 10 days.
Failing grade
At its routine inspection, the bar and food truck were cited for “numerous priority violations” for improper food storage, improper cold holding related to time and temperature control for food safety as well as hand sink violations.
The stationary food truck is set up outside the bar in the parking lot. All of the violations took place inside the bar, said Sharon Pettit, environmental health deputy county manager for the Houston County Health Department.
Among the violations:
- A container of raw steak was stored directly on a package of sliced deli meats in the rear reach-in cooler. The state regulates how food is stored to protect from cross contamination.
- Sliced cheddar and raw chicken wings inside a small counter-top reach-in cooler were above the required temperature for food safety.
- Several containers of chili inside the rear reach-in cooler did not have proper date marking to indicate the day by which the food should be consumed.
- Raw shelled eggs with an expiration date of Dec. 23, 2022 were inside the rear reach-in cooler. “Eggs and time/temperature control safety foods that are labeled as ‘keep refrigerated’ and that are for sale or service to the consumer or used as an ingredient in other foods shall be immediately discarded and shall not be sold, served, or used after the manufacturer’s expiration date or the sell-by date,” according to the inspection report.
Other Houston County scores
Most Houston County restaurants, bars and food trucks earned “A’s” on their routine inspections Feb. 1-28, including multiple with perfect scores of 100. More than a dozen earned “B’s” and two received “C’s.

Here’s how the scores are graded: “A” for a score between 90 and 100 that indicates “food safety excellence.” “B” for a score between 80 and 89, considered “satisfactory compliance,” and “C” for “marginal compliance’‘ for a score between 70 and 79. A “U” for ``unsatisfactory compliance” is given when a restaurant scores a 69 or less.
Restaurant inspections are designed to protect public health. The Telegraph reviews inspection reports monthly and generally reports only the best and the worst scores.
