Tribute placed at City Council chambers
Attendees at the Warner Robins City Council meeting a couple of weeks ago saw a touching tribute to Henrietta McIntyre, a former mayor and councilwoman.
Long after she left office, McIntyre regularly attended council meetings and was well-known for shaking her cane when addressing council if she was upset about something. She died Aug. 8 at 91.
At the Aug. 15 council meeting, visitors found one seat that was occupied. Staff of the mayor’s office had placed a bouquet of flowers and a cane on the front row seat where McIntyre sat.
City Attorney Jim Elliott said the tribute was the idea of Mayor Randy Toms and Councilman Mike Davis. Davis had earlier remarked “that cane has been shook at me so many times.” He said he was going to miss her presence at meetings.
In 1974 McIntyre and another woman were the first females elected to Warner Robins City Council. In 1993 she was appointed as interim mayor, becoming the city’s first and only female mayor.
