Looking to volunteer in Middle Georgia? Here’s what you need to know.

It’s National Volunteer Month, and in Middle Georgia, several organizations offer volunteer opportunities.

Whether you like to play with dogs or you want to put a smile on a stranger’s face, Middle Georgia has you covered and it’s fairly simple to get involved.

Here is a list of places to volunteer in Middle Georgia and brief description of how they serve the community:

People

The Rescue Mission of Middle Georgia started in 1956 and works to provide shelter and meals to people in need. Volunteers at the Rescue Mission have opportunities to work in the kitchen, the bargain center and in administrative roles as well as other roles. Macon Outreach has worked since 1971 to address the needs of those living in poverty in Middle Georgia, according to their website. They need volunteers everyday to help serve food, give out clothes and register their clients. Go to their website and fill out an interest form.

The Macon Volunteer Clinic offers free primary health care to people working in Bibb County who are uninsured and whose income is equal to or less than 200 percent of the federal poverty level, according to their website. The Mentor’s Project of Bibb County provides mentors for students at Bibb County middle and high schools who need additional support to reach their academic and life goals, according to their website. To become a mentor and to find out more, apply here.

Rebuilding Macon does just that. They repair homes of elderly and disabled people free of charge, according to their website. Rebuilding Macon is looking for groups of volunteers to help, but children under 14 are not allowed to volunteer. Find out more here.

Museum of Arts and Sciences serves the Middle Georgia community by preserving history and educating the public, and you can volunteer in many different ways. Go to their website to find out more.
