Stretch of I-75 stretch named for former Georgia governor
Former Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue now has a section of interstate named in his honor.
A portion of Interstate 75 that goes through Houston County has been named “Governor Sonny Perdue Highway” in recognition of the Bonaire native who was the state’s 81st governor. A dedication event this week was attended by several state leaders including Perdue’s cousin, U.S. Sen. David Perdue and state Sen. Larry Walker III (R-Perry).
“It is an honor to be a part of this historic event,” Walker said in a statement. “Gov. Perdue is a strong leader and his personal commitment to the well-being of Georgia and its citizens is remarkable. This highway dedication recognizes the positive impact he left on this great state and our local communities.”
In 2002, Perdue became the first Republican to be elected as governor of Georgia since Reconstruction. Born in Perry in 1946 and a graduate of Warner Robins High School, Perdue served as governor from 2003-2011.
He was also a legislator in the Georgia Senate and a captain in the U.S. Air Force.
“During his two terms as governor, he cut state spending and reduced the size of state government to balance the budget,” a news release announcing the honor said. “He also improved high school graduation rates and SAT scores.”
Prior to becoming a successful businessman and politician, Perdue was a standout football player at Warner Robins and played one year at the Universtiy of Georgia.
