A 7-year-old Jones County boy was killed earlier this week after he picked up a relative’s gun and accidentally shot himself, authorities said Friday.

Thomas William Paisie III, of Rincon, was at his grandparents’ house in the River North subdivision, near the Bibb County line in west Jones County, when he picked up the unsecured gun Wednesday afternoon, Jones County Sheriff’s Office investigator Kenny Gleaton said. Two adults were home, but the Paisie was in a room by himself.

“They heard the sound of a shot and then came in and found the child injured and immediately called 911,” Gleaton said. “Unfortunately, the victim had passed away at the scene.”

Gleaton said Paisie’s death will be ruled an accidental shooting.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the child. It’s a tragic event,” he said. “Also, I would urge people, if they are going to choose to have firearms in their homes, I just encourage them to be responsible and store them safely and separately from ammunition. Keep them under lock and key at all times when not in use.”

Pasie was born in Macon and attended Riverside United Methodist Church, according to his obituary.
