Arrest made in Cochran shooting death
A 17-year-old Cochran man has been charged with the Friday afternoon shooting death of 32-year-old Dantay Ates, according to a Wednesday evening news release from the GBI.
Willie Whitehead was arrested Wednesday at his home on North Sixth Street and charged with murder in connection with Ates’ killing.
Ates had gone to the same street, just up from one of the town’s main thoroughfares, East Dykes Street, to discuss the theft of a four-wheeler with someone in the area, according to the release. He was shot and then driven to the Cochran hospital where he died.
Whitehead was being booked in the Bleckley County jail as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The Bleckley County Sheriff’s Office, Cochran Police Department and GBI continue to investigate the slaying, the release said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cochran Police Department at 478-934-4282 or GBI’s Eastman office at 478-374-6988.
