Macon-Bibb County public pools will open Memorial Day weekend but on a limited schedule because of a lifeguard shortage.

The Parks and Recreation Department is 16 lifeguards short of the 27 usually hired for the county’s public pools in the summer. At least seven more lifeguards are needed to open the pools for more days, according to a news release from Macon-Bibb County. All pools will be closed on Sundays.

Potential lifeguards must be 15 years old and pass the American Red Cross swim test. The county will pay for lifeguard certification for those who will work at one of its pools. Pay is $10.03 an hour. To apply, or for more information, go to www.maconbibb.us and click on the Employment tab, or stop by the Human Resources Department at 682 Cherry St., Suite 400.

The cost to swim at a public pool is $1, with an additional $1 charged to use the slide at the East Macon Community Center.
