Early voting set to hit Middle Georgia

Early voting throughout Georgia begins Monday for the May 24 general primaries and elections.

In Middle Georgia, ballots will not only include various federal and state level races, but also local ones for voters to decide. Early voting will run through May 20.

This election cycle in Macon-Bibb also means a second early voting site is ready. Election officials decided to offer another option for voters by opening up a section of the downtown Terminal Station.

An entrance to the Terminal voting site can be easily reached through a parking lot off Fifth Street, on the side of the 200 Cherry St. building. The other early Macon-Bibb voting location is at the Board of Elections office at 2445 Pio Nono Ave.

Among the races up for grabs are sheriff, tax commissioner, three contested County Commission districts and several school board seats.

In other midstate races, Houston County features some contested elections involving the County Commission and school board. Also, two Peach County Commission posts have more than one candidate vying for them.

Other counties such as Baldwin, Twiggs, Monroe, Crawford, Laurens and Peach also have local races on the May 24 ballot.

Reps. Blackmon, Clark named to bipartisan panel

Two Houston County state lawmakers have been named to a state House panel that will look for ways to strengthen Georgia’s base communities against any future action by the federal Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission.

Republicans Shaw Blackmon of Bonaire and Heath Clark of Warner Robins were among 15 representatives named by House Speaker David Ralston, R-Blue Ridge, to the bipartisan panel.

The panel will hold at least five hearings this year and give any recommendations to the state House in time for next year’s session.

The military is one of a handful of policy areas that regularly attracts Republican and Democrat agreement. This year, for example, bipartisan majorities passed bills meant to make it possible to get technical college credit or make it quicker to get a professional license based on military experience.

Perdue sets mobile office hours

U.S. Sen. David Perdue will have mobile office hours in two Middle Georgia counties for the month of May.

The office hours provide a chance to meet with the Republican’s staff across the state.

“Serving Georgians is one of my top priorities,” Perdue said in a release. “My team and I want to help all Georgians that may not otherwise be able to visit our Atlanta office location. We have field representatives based in each region of the state, and we are excited for the opportunity to extend the reach of our constituent services in the coming months.”

To reach the constituent services team, call 404-865-0087.

On May 9, the conference room at Thomaston’s Upson Regional Medical Center, 801 W. Gordon St., will feature mobile office hours from 10 a.m. to noon. Also, on May 24, the mobile office will be open at the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber, 130 S. Jefferson St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

To reach the constituent services team, call the Atlanta office at 404-865-0087.
