Funeral service Saturday for Central ninth-grader Marques Rainey

Central High School students gathered in the gymnasium Thursday afternoon to pay tribute to ninth-grader Marques Rainey, who died Saturday.

Rainey, 15, collapsed at his Jones County home Saturday morning. He was pronounced dead later at Coliseum Medical Centers, said Matt Jarratt, a deputy Jones County coroner.

His funeral service is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Baptist Church, 1180 Haywood Road.

“It’s still undetermined at this time” what happened, Jarratt said. “There’s nothing official.”

The teen woke up Saturday and complained of breathing difficulties and chest pain, Jarratt said, and he was sweating heavily.

His father took him outside, where he collapsed. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The state medical examiner’s office will perform tests to determine what caused Rainey’s death. It may be weeks before those results are known.

“It’s really still up in the air as to what happened,” Jarratt said. “We just don’t have anything concrete about what happened to him.”

At Central, students have been eulogizing Rainey in different ways during the school week. On Thursday afternoon, students gathered in the school gym to remember the teen in word and song, and they later released balloons in his memory.

Jones Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
