Macon newborn receives money for college savings account
An 8-pound 10-ounce baby boy born Monday in Macon already has a leg up on saving for college.
The infant, called simply "Baby Boy Dvorak," was the first baby born at the Medical Center, Navicent Health on Monday, the deadline for filing income taxes. Since he was the first "Tax Day" baby, the hospital awarded his parents $1,529 for their new son's Path2College 529 Plan college savings account.
"This is such a nice welcome into the world, a generous welcome," his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy-Dvorak, said in a news release from the hospital. "It is a really wonderful surprise. We've had two big surprises today! This is a wonderful start -- it's really nice to have a start on his education."
The release said the Path2College 529 Plan partnered with three Georgia hospitals to raise awareness about the importance of saving money for college and financial planning. The other two hospitals who awarded money to parents Monday were Northside Hospital in Atlanta and Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.
Dr. Ninfa M. Saunders, president and CEO of Navicent Health, said in the release that the hospital is "thrilled" to invest in Baby Boy Dvorak's education.
"I personally believe that education is vital to an individual's success, and as an organization, Navicent Health promotes the education and continued learning of each employee," she said.
The Path2College plan also launched a statewide 2016 Newborn Sweepstakes, that gives Georgia families who have a baby this calendar year the chance to enter for a chance to win $5,529 to go toward a child's or grandchild's college savings, according to the release. The hospital where the Newborn Sweepstakes winner was born also will receive $1,529.
Parents, grandparents and guardians of Georgia babies born this year can visit www.Path2College529.com until April 14, 2017, for official rules, prize details and information on how to enter.
