Driver walks away after crashing into steps of Tattnall Square Center for the Arts
Steve Bell was in bed at 2:30 a.m. Friday when the crunch of steel and marble woke him and his wife.
Across the street, a black Mustang GT was perched on the stairs of Mercer University's Tattnall Square Center for the Arts.
The entire second step was pushed off the stairway, and the iron railings were twisted.
Bell said that before he called the Bibb County Sheriff's Office, he saw a young man walk away from the scene. Mercer police arrived first, about five minutes after the call.
The wreck happened 10 minutes before heavy rain began to fall, and the car was towed from the scene, Bell said.
Mercer Police Chief Gary Collins said Bibb deputies handled the case and the report.
No arrests had been made by late Friday afternoon. In an e-mail, sheriff's Lt. Randy Gonzalez said there were no updates in the case.
Bell said the crash was a teaching lesson for his 16-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter, as well as two exchange students the family is hosting.
"Nothing good happens after midnight," he said.
