Macon-Bibb EMA sounds tornado sirens as precaution, no damage
At about 3 a.m. Friday, as a line of severe thunderstorm was barreling down on Taylor and Crawford Counties, the National Weather Service initiated a tornado warning for those counties.
Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Director Spencer Hawkins activated the Emergency Operations Center at about 9 p.m. Thursday when the tornado watch was issued for Middle Georgia.
With the severe storms on track to hit Bibb County, Hawkins fired off the tornado sirens for about three minutes.
"We had this huge severe storm cell kind of making a beeline to us," Hawkins said Friday morning. "We wanted to make sure everyone had warning, especially at that time of night."
Once Hawkins received word that Bibb County would not be included in the tornado warning, he turned off the sirens.
Aside from a couple of downed trees and some street flooding, no damage was reported in Bibb County.
The National Weather Service warns another bout of severe weather is possible Friday afternoon across Middle Georgia, along and south of Interstate 20.
