Fire shuts down Macon's Shurling Drive

Shurling Drive in east Macon was closed for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon as the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department worked to extinguish a 2-acre grass fire near power lines in the 1300 block.

The fire was called in about 3 p.m., and the Georgia Forestry Commission also responded, Battalion Chief Timothy Johnson said.

"The biggest problem that we had was just getting to it with our trucks," Johnson said. "We had to drag a lot of hose a very long way to get down here to where the fire was at."

The cause of the fire hasn't been officially determined, but Johnson said the department's investigators have heard reports that children were playing in the area. No one has come forward to take responsibility, he said.
