Man who crashed while fleeing deputy dies in Macon hospital

The driver of a Lincoln sedan who crashed into a utility pole on Shurling Drive in Macon earlier in the week died Friday afternoon.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Deangelos Barber, 35, died about 5:15 p.m. at the Medical Center, Navicent Health. Jones said Barber died of a closed-head injury.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, a sheriff's deputy saw a car speeding eastbound on Shurling, and the driver refused to pull over, according to the sheriff's office. After the chase went into Jones County, Barber turned around and headed back toward Macon. He crashed the car on Shurling near Old Clinton Road.

Rescue crews had to cut through the car's roof to free Barber and his passenger, 18-year-old Onterius Barber.
