Black History Month calendar

Events are scheduled across Middle Georgia in the coming weeks in celebration of Black History Month to mark the history, culture and achievements of the black community.

Feb. 5

Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery

Tubman African American Museum, 310 Cherry St. An exhibit with images taken from the 1850s to 1930s. Photographs explore different ways black Americans positioned themselves in society. For more information, call (478) 743-8544.

Feb. 6

Civil War Class

10 a.m. to noon, Cannonball House, 856 Mulberry St. Instructional Civil War history class for first- to third-grade students. Students will learn about the Civil War's key historical figures and events. Followed by an arts and crafts event. $15 per student. Reservations required. Limit of 12 students. (478) 745-5982.

Sixth Annual Heritage Festival

6 p.m., Douglass Theatre, 355 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The All-Douglass Choir performs "A Choral Celebration of African-American Composers," featuring Bibb County high school students. Free admission. (478) 292-0105.

Research resources

7 p.m., Flint Energies Conference Room, 900 Ga. 96, Warner Robins. The Central Georgia Genealogical Society presents Johnetta Brooks for its February program. Living History Tours

Black History Month Film Series "Honeydripper"

Feb. 13

James Brown: The Macon Factor

2 p.m., Douglass Theatre, 355 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The event pays homage to James Brown and explores the musical influence Macon had on the artist. The final discussion includes a musical. The discussion will be facilitated by Deborah-Patrice Hamlin. (478) 744-0836.

What Color is Your Brother?

Jim Alexander: Participant Observer

The exhibit will be open from Jan. 22- April 2 at the Tubman African American Museum, 310 Cherry St. The exhibit will showcase over 40 photographs from Jim Alexander. The photos represent more than four decades of the artist's work. (478) 743-8544.
