Macon organization hosting community cleanup, block party Feb. 6
An initiative that focuses on revitalization in various Macon neighborhoods has upcoming events that begin with a community cleanup and block party next weekend.
The Macon-Bibb County Shalom Zones -- an effort led by churches, community leaders, businesses and local government -- is hosting a cleanup Feb. 6 on Sunnydale Drive in east Macon. The cleanup will be followed by a block party that will feature a DJ and basketball tournament, said Frank Austin, coordinator of the Macon-Bibb County Shalom Zones.
The "Big Neighborhood Clean-up" also is being presented by WellCare of Georgia, Harrell's & Sons Barbershop and the Team Baadaye Athletic Program. The Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful Commission is donating supplies for the cleanup, but people are welcome to bring other items such as gloves, Austin said.
Later that week, Shalom Zones is hosting a citywide meeting, which is scheduled for Feb. 11 from 5-7 p.m. at the Macon-Bibb County Health Department, 171 Emery Highway.
"Any concerned citizens interested in their communities are invited to attend," Austin said.
