Man with gun at Macon's Medical Center, Navicent Health admitted after surrender

A man who was holding a gun outside the Medical Center, Navicent Health on Wednesday evening was admitted as a patient after he surrendered his weapon to authorities just before 8 p.m.

The hospital's police called the Bibb County Sheriff's Office to the scene in front of the Albert Luce Heart Tower about 6 p.m., Deputy Clay Williams said at an evening press conference.

"They contained the situation (and) got everybody out of the area," Williams said of hospital police and sheriff's deputies. "No one was ever in any danger. We were able to talk the subject down."

The man never entered the hospital but stayed outside the Heart Tower on Hemlock Street.

The man was not a patient or employee of the hospital, Williams said, but the sheriff's office is still investigating whether or not he was a visitor. Williams could not say how old the man was, but did say that he currently faces no charges and is now a patient.

"They will do evaluations and make sure everything is OK before they release him," Williams said. "(The situation) was resolved wonderfully where everybody gets to go home at night."
