Macon won't ring in new year with ball drop

It wasn't clear who, if anyone, dropped the ball, but for whatever reason Macon's New Year's Eve Cherry Blossom Ball Drop won't happen this year.

Cherry Blossom Festival officials said in a news release Monday that the "co-presenters" of last year's ball drop "decided, for various reasons, not to present the event this year."

The countdown-to-midnight gathering, followed by fireworks, had taken place in the past at Cherry Street Plaza near Terminal Station.

Festival officials said the event may return next year.
