SUV lands atop car in pileup near Macon's Wesleyan College on Forsyth Road

A Jeep Cherokee wound up on top of a Saturn sedan in a four-vehicle pileup Wednesday in front of Wesleyan College

Linda Jellum was stopped on Forsyth Road at the Tucker Road traffic light when she was hit from behind, sending her Jeep up in the air.

She heard the initial crash when a GMC Yukon, driven by Carlie Lockett, hit the Saturn stopped behind Jellum.

"Once I was hit, I was worried I was going to hit the car in front of me, too, and then I just wanted to get out of the car because I was afraid we were going to get hit again, so I had to crawl out of the window to get out of there," said Jellum, who was headed from her home in Bolingbroke to a Pure Barre exercise class.

The Saturn popped her car up and smashed into the back of a black sedan in front of her.

The three-month old Jeep landed nose down on the edge of the sidewalk along the Munroe Science Center at Wesleyan.

Employees and students watched from the lawn as ambulance crews loaded up those injured in the wreck, including driver Brittany Stanley and her child from the first vehicle, Lockett and her two passengers in the Yukon.

Firefighters had to jack up the Jeep to free the driver of the Saturn, who was identified by a relative at the scene as Robert Green.

"We had to stabilize the vehicle and remove the patient," Lt. Robert Jordan said. "It was pretty challenging, but we took care of it very quickly."

Green was talking to rescuers and complaining of chest pain, Jordan said.

"I think he's going to be fine," Jordan said. "It was a pretty significant accident, though."

Jellum said the sun was shining brightly into the eyes of drivers headed south.

"The woman driving this Yukon apparently had the sun in her eyes and didn't see that we were stopped, and she slammed into the blue car that's underneath me. And the blue car pushed me into the car in front of me and into the air."

Lockett was cited for following too closely, said deputy Linda Howard, a public information officer for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
