Driver hurt crashing down embankment off Macon's Broadway

A Chevrolet Tahoe crashed down an embankment after a rear-end collision in the 2700 block of Broadway about 6:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Shaquitta Warren, 42, of Macon hurt her back after the vehicle spun around, went off the road, down a steep drop, across a field and hit a tree on Stevens Street.

Jabias Riggins was hauling waste in a long dump truck in the right lane of Broadway when the accident happened.

"I got past the bus (maintenance) station right here, and all I heard was a boom," Riggins said. "She ran into the back of me. I thought it was a busted transmission or something."

A witness who had just passed the truck told Bibb County deputies he did not see tail lights on the truck, but saw the headlights of the careening SUV in his rear view mirror.

Riggins was not sure how the Tahoe went off the road after the crash.

"I guess her gas pedal got stuck or something and she went and shot back across the field," he said.

One of the SUV's tires flew across the large grass lot toward Thompson Street before the vehicle slammed into trees.

Warren was alert and talking to rescuers when she was taken by ambulance to Medical Center, Navicent Health, where she was in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accident.
