Woman dies after getting hit on Gray Highway in Macon
A woman died late Tuesday from injuries sustained after being hit by a car in the southbound lanes of Gray Highway earlier in the day, according to a Bibb County Sheriff's Office news release.
Just after 6 a.m., Bibb County sheriff's deputies were called to the 1900 block of Gray Highway near Wood Valley Road and the Jumbo's Village Market.
The driver of a white, 1999 BMW Z3 was headed south when the woman stepped in front of the car, smashing the windshield on impact, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
An ambulance rushed the pedestrian, 42-year-old Christie Lynn Rogers, to the Medical Center, Navicent Health.
A woman with a medical insignia on her license plate also stopped to render aid to Rogers and the driver, a 52-year-old Haddock woman, who was hit by glass when the windshield caved in.
Shortly after the first ambulance left the scene, another crew arrived to tend to the driver, who also was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries, Williams said.
Due to the serious nature of Rogers' injuries, Bibb County sheriff's traffic investigators gathered evidence at the scene and measured the car's skid marks.
They sprayed orange paint along the black rubber marks on the pavement and to note the position of the car and the woman's tennis shoe that was in the concrete median divider.
The investigation blocked southbound lanes of the road until about 9 a.m., which had traffic backed up for about a mile.
The accident is currently under investigation.
After deputies closed the highway, a woman in a white Toyota sedan was stopped after traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of the divided highway.
She underwent a roadside sobriety test before being handcuffed and put into a patrol car to be taken to the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center on an unrelated DUI charge.
