Veterans Day activities across the midstate
Veterans Day is Wednesday, but activities abound across Middle Georgia much of this week to pay tribute to the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Here's a sampler:
TUESDAY
A 9 a.m. program will be held at Rutland High School, 6250 Skipper Road, to dedicate the Junior ROTC wing at the school, which is being named the Cpl. Thomas Mosley and Pfc. Frank Johnson Marine Corps Leadership Education Department.
A 10 a.m. program will be held at Vineville Academy of the Arts, 2260 Vineville Ave., featuring guest speaker Tech. Sgt. Jocelyn Foster of the Air National Guard, as well as performances by the Vineville Voices and the Howard High School band and color guard.
A program will be held at 2:15 p.m. at Bernd Elementary School, 4160 Ocmulgee East Blvd.
A Veterans Appreciation Concert, open to the public, will be held at 4 p.m. at Central High School, 2155 Napier Ave.
Thomson Middle School, 301 Thomson St. in Centerville, will hold "breakfast with a hero" to honor veterans at 7:30 a.m. The speaker will be Col. Lee Olyniec, associate deputy director, engineering and technical management, Air Force Sustainment Center at Robins Air Force Base.
Huntington Middle School, 206 Wellborn Road in Warner Robins, will have a schoolwide assembly to honor veterans at 7:50 a.m. 1st Lt. William Stephenson, Robins Air Force Base executive officer, 78th Mission Support Group, will be the guest speaker. The band and choir will perform.
Hilltop Elementary School, 301 Robert Bryson Smith Parkway in Bonaire, will have a 9:30 a.m. ceremony to pay tribute to military families and students. Several songs will be sung, with narration, to help explain the meaning of "Yankee Doodle," "Taps" and more.
WEDNESDAY
A Veterans Day service will be held at 11 a.m. at Linwood Cemetery, off Walnut Street. The speaker will be retired Army Master Sgt. Donald Collier.
A Veterans Day salute and flag retirement ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at Fort Hawkins, off Emery Highway. The speaker will be retired Brig. Gen. James Sehorn, a former POW during the Vietnam War.
Bands at Veterans High School, 340 Piney Grove Road in Kathleen, will present the sixth annual Veterans for Veterans concert at 11 a.m.
The Telfair County Elementary School Veterans Day program will be held at 9 a.m. at the school. The program will include inspirational readings and patriotic music. The guest speaker will be retired Telfair educator Charles House, an Air Force veteran who served in the Vietnam War.
At the Wellness Center, Navicent Health, on Northside Drive, there will be a complimentary continental breakfast for veterans from 7-8 a.m., as well as a free wellness day for veterans from noon to 4 p.m. Nonmembers who are veterans will be able to access all services, including the pool, walking track, cardio and weight equipment.
The Macon-Bibb County NAACP chapter will provide lunch to veterans from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Buck Melton Community Center , 150 Sessions Drive.
Unity-N-Community partners will provide a free lunch for veterans from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Me Maw's, 4254 Mumford Road.
THURSDAY
A 9:30 a.m. program at Barden Elementary School, 2521 Anderson Drive, will feature musical performances. Macon-Bibb County Fire Chief Marvin Riggins will be the speaker.
Eagle Springs Elementary, 3581 U.S. 41 N. in Byron, will have a Veterans Day ceremony in the gym at 1:30 p.m.
The Medical Center of Peach County, Navicent Health, at 1960 Ga. 247 Connector, Byron, will provide free angioscreens for veterans from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Call 1-800-627-2393 to register.
