The Bibb County Sheriff's Office is investigating a traffic accident that involved a child being hit by a Ford Explorer.

About 4:30 p.m., 2-year-old Dedruis Jones was playing in the front yard with his parents when he ran down the driveway toward the road, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The driver of the Explorer said he was traveling west on Ell Street when he noticed a small child running toward the road from a driveway. The driver said he slammed on brakes but couldn't avoid hitting Jones, according to the release.

Paramedics took Jones to a local hospital, where he is listed in serious but stable condition.
