Lizella logging property fire expected to smolder for days

Macon-Bibb County firefighters expect piles of logs to burn for days in Lizella on the west end of the county.

Shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday, crews were called to Carl Drive, which is not far from Fulton Mill and Bethel Church roads.

A worker on the property set fire to the piles, and flames spread to an old vacant mobile home, said Sgt. Ben Gleaton, a Macon-Bibb County fire investigator.

People in the area can expect to continue to see smoke rising from the site, depending on weather conditions.

"It's going to be burning for days and days," Gleaton said. "Some of those trees are two and a half feet around."

Fire crews will continue to monitor the property.

Property owners must secure burn permits before conducting controlled burns, which are outlawed at night, Gleaton said.

The EPD's outdoor burn ban was lifted Oct. 1.
