Middle Georgia events remember those who died in 9/11 attacks
Fourteen years after terrorists struck New York and Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2001, several Middle Georgia communities are planning remembrances Friday.
WARNER ROBINS
The opening ceremony of a 9/11 day of service to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
The event will take place at the Warner Robins Law Enforcement Center at 100 Watson Blvd., according to a Warner Robins police news release.
Each year, the Warner Robins Women’s Club and the Houston County GOP Outreach committees get together to thank first responders in Warner Robins. This year, they’ve extended their event to all first responders in Houston County, the release said.
“We want them to know that we honor them and we want to show our gratitude for the services they provide to our community,” Vivian Childs, of the Houston County GOP, said in the release.
State, county and city leaders are expected to attend the ceremony.
MILLEDGEVILLE
Georgia Military College will commemorate Patriot Day beginning with morning formation on Grant Parade at 7:40 a.m. Friday.
Lt. Gen. William Caldwell will speak and three GMC prep school students directly impacted by the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks will lay a memorial wreath.
Between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., the names of those killed in the 2001 attack and those who gave their lives in the resulting wars will be etched on the brick walkways on campus.
The public is invited to join the students for the tribute.
MACON
Macon-Bibb County leaders will gather at 8:45 a.m. Friday at Public Safety Memorial Park on Mulberry Street near the intersection of Second Street.
A brief ceremony will honor law enforcement officers, firefighters and others killed in the terrorist attacks 14 years ago.
Barden Elementary School, located at 2521 Anderson Drive, will host a Sept. 11 Observance Program at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Bibb County campus police Officer Earl Evans will be the guest speaker. Officials from the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department’s Station 12 and campus police will be honored during the program.
DUBLIN
The Carl Vinson VA Medical Center will host a 9/11 observance on Sept. 11 to honor the memory of those who died in the attacks.
The ceremony will take place on the front lawn of the medical center by the main flag pole at 8 a.m.
The ceremony will include a formal raising of the U.S. flag by VA Police with a musical accompaniment by Air Force veteran Dee Eastridge, a moment of silence and a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
PERRY
Cry Out America, a nationwide Christian prayer initiative, will host a one-hour event beginning at noon on the lawn of the old courthouse on Carroll Street to reflect on the greatness of America, remember the sacrifices of public safety officials and pray for a spiritual awakening. The Warner Robins High School Honor Guard of the JROTC will present the colors. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. The event will be moved inside the courthouse if there is inclement weather.
