Multiple construction projects happening in Macon will result in lane closures next week as the Georgia Department of Transportation continues improving local interstates.

Spring and Second streets will experience alternating single-lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. June 29 through July 1, according to a news release Friday from GDOT.

There also will be construction activity from June 26 through July 3 in the following areas:

  • I-75 southbound and northbound roadways along Riverside Drive
  • I-16 westbound and I-75 to Walnut Creek
  • I-75 from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound.

Power poles and lines will be relocated along Riverside Road. Erosion control devices also will be installed, and GDOT will work on the I-75 shoulders for “future traffic shift,” the agency said.

GDOT is constructing a “bridge superstructure” for the I-16 Spring Street entrance and exit ramps, as well as a new bridge superstructure on Second Street.

There also will be one new bridge superstructure on I-16 westbound and two new bridges on I-16 eastbound. The department will construct two new I-16 westbound entrance ramps.

The department’s interstate improvement project aims to widen and reconstruct I-16, I-75 and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County. The project is worth $620 million.

“When complete, new CD lanes, additional interstate lanes, new interstate on-and off-ramps, upgrades to 11 bridges, new walls, upgraded drainage systems, etc. will deliver safer and improved mobility for Macon-Bibb’s local commuters and businesses, regional travelers and commercial freight from the Georgia southern coast to destinations within the state and throughout the U.S.,” according to GDOT.
