Macon student who died in crash remembered for ‘bringing joy into every room’
The Macon-Bibb community is mourning the death of a 16-year-old Bibb County School District student who was in a car accident April 11.
Harrison Doyle Morris was one of four juveniles involved in the crash, which occurred off-road near the intersection of Vinson and Liberty Church roads, according to a Bibb County Sheriff’s Office news release. Morris, an 11th-grader at Rutland High School, was ejected from the back of a Dodge Ram 1500; the other youths sustained minor injuries.
Macon-Bibb Coroner Leon Jones pronounced Morris dead at the scene.
Close relatives and friends remember Morris as a light in their lives.
“… He grew into a tall and handsome young man, full of personality, with a gift for bringing joy into every room,” his online obituary read. “His playful spirit was matched by a heart that loved deeply, and he loved without hesitation.”
Morris also often served others, including feeding the homeless and helping his mother at church.
“Harrison found joy in life’s simple moments, especially the time he spent with his family,” the obituary continued, noting that he often turned shopping trips with his mother into special memories.
Morris also cherished time with his sister, Farah, and “loved to laugh, make others laugh, and was especially known for his playful attempts to scare those around him,” the obituary said.
Dozens of community members have shared condolences on Morris’ obituary page and on social media.
“Harrison was one of the most important people in my life. I’ve known him for almost two years, and he never changed. He always kept it real and saved me through my hardest times,” one commenter, Jemma Farmer, wrote, recalling long phone calls and conversations about Legos, one of his passions. “He will always be in my heart no matter what.”
Morris was active in Scouting, a member of Cub Scout Pack 225 and Boy Scout Troop 235. Scouting was especially meaningful to both him and his father, according to his obituary.
The Boy Scouts of America’s Central Georgia Council also shared condolences in a social media post to Morris’ family and his Troop 235 Scouting family, saying it was deeply saddened by his death and noting the impact he had on many lives.
“Harrison’s dedication, character and commitment to Scouting left a lasting impression on his fellow Scouts, leaders and community,” the nonprofit organization said. “He embodied the values of service, friendship and perseverance, and his presence will be greatly missed.”
Morris’ family declined to speak for this story.
Bibb County School District spokesperson Stephanie Hartley said counselors and crisis support team members were at Rutland High School on Monday morning to support students and staff.
“Counselors will continue to be available as needed, and parents may reach out to the school to request additional supports or resources,” Hartley said in an email April 13.
