Snow chances grow for Macon this weekend. Here are expected totals, timing
The latest National Weather Service (NWS) forecast predicts more winter weather for Macon, but how much and when? Here’s what to know:
Is snow in the forecast for Macon?
Although the National Weather Service is “confident that the highest snow amounts will occur in eastern Georgia,” there is snow to come in Macon and Middle Georgia areas.
The latest model shows totals up to 1 inch of snow to fall in Macon, but more eastern areas can expect between three and 5 inches.
AccuWeather meteorologists on the other hand, expect “little to no accumulation” with a 2% chance of snow up to 2 inches.
Let’s check out the timing of the predicted snow:
What’s the timing of the snow and coldest temperatures?
The predicted timing of the snow, according to the NWS, is at its peak on Saturday between the hours of 4 a.m. and 4 p.m. But the main concern is wind chills and extremely cold temperatures, which could dip into the low 20s on Saturday.
However, Sunday it is predicted that temperatures will drop again.
“A prolonged period of below-freezing temperatures will occur this weekend — up to 60 hours in some places. The hazardously cold wind chills will increase the risk for cold-related illnesses and pipe bursts,” as stated on the NWS website.
Single digit temperatures are expected to blast through Macon on Sunday, with lows that could be around three degrees at 6 a.m. So, if snow did fall in Macon or surrounding areas, dangerous road conditions would be a concern.
On Monday and Tuesday, cold temperatures will likely stick around, with lows in the teens and highs around 41 degrees.
During extreme cold temperatures, National Weather Service experts urge residents to stay warm by staying indoors, dressing in layers and consuming warm to hot beverages. It is also recommended to check on vulnerable individuals like the elderly or pregnant people.
