Police investigate bomb threat at Mercer welcome center. What we know.

Local law enforcement has determined that a reported bomb threat at Mercer University in Macon Tuesday afternoon was false, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said.

Bibb County police assisted Mercer University Police by responding on the scene around 12:42 p.m. to investigate an active bomb threat delivered to the Emily Myers Admission and Welcome center on campus via email with an IP address originating from Germany, police and school officials say.

“A sweep was performed, and the threat was determined false. No one was harmed,” said Sgt. Christopher Williams.

The university issued a shelter-in-place lockdown for students while police evacuated and searched the building.

Mercer spokesperson Jennifer Fairfield said the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department were working together to clear the admissions building.

“As soon as it’s cleared, we will issue an all-clear (announcement) to everyone,” Fairfield told The Telegraph.

Campus operations returned to normal, but Mercer police and local law enforcement are continuing to investigate the case, Fairfield said Wednesday morning.
