GA has one of the best cities in the US to retire, Forbes says. Here’s where and why

Relaxing mornings, outdoor fun and fine dining — if this sounds like your idea of retirement, we have some good news for you.

Forbes just released their list of the 25 best places to enjoy retirement and there are so many spots to kick your feet up, golf, explore arts and entertainment, and everything in between. From places like Charleston, Austin, Hilton Head and more, this list is sure to get you excited to pack up and start your retirement. However, if you live in Georgia, you may not have to go very far because one Georgia city is on the list.

Which city is it?

Noted for its great college atmosphere, arts/culture activities, fine dining and outdoor options, Athens, Georgia is one of the best places to enjoy retirement, says Forbes.

“The climate is agreeable, the air quality is good, and there’s an above-average ratio of primary care physicians per capita,” according to the Forbes website.

The population in Athens is around 130,000 and the cost of living is 12% below the national average with $334,000 being the median home price in the area.

With Athens being the home of The University of Georgia, there are also plenty of learning opportunities for seniors, which includes classes with no tuition.

In addition, retirees can enjoy a UGA game, live music and shopping in Athens.

So, are there any negatives of living in Athens?

Well, Forbes experts said the crime rate is slightly above the national average in Athens, Georgia.

If you’re looking for a safe neighborhood in Athens, the Neighborhood Scout website recommends living in Carrington Plantation, Green Acres or Village at Jennings Mill.
