How much cash can you legally carry on a plane in GA?
There are no specific laws or rules about how much money you can travel with domestically., but there are rules when traveling internationally with cash.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website, international travels that have more than $10,000 must declare it on a “transportation of currency” form. But cash isn’t the only thing you must declare if it’s over this amount. You must also declare any other monetary instruments such as coins, travelers’ checks, cashier’s checks, promissory notes and money orders.
So, what happens if you don’t declare it?
If you fail to do this and are caught, penalties include confiscation of the money, fines and even jail time, as stated on the usa.gov website.
If traveling with large sums of money domestically, it is recommended that you do the following:
- Ask TSA officials to screen you in a private location because you don’t want others to know you have a lot of cash
- Always keep cash and other valuables with you in a carry-on bag. Never leave such items in checked baggage
