Elderly man dies after fatal house fire in Macon, coroner says

A fire that started in an elderly Macon man’s kitchen left him dead Monday, according to the Bibb County Coroner’s Office.

Oliver Jefferson, 86, was the only person at the house when the fire happened, Coroner Leon Jones said.

The fire broke out at Jefferson’s red brick house in the 1100 block of Hartridge Drive on Sunday night, Jones said. A 911 call reported the fire around 9 p.m., Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Christopher Williams said.

Deputies and the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department responded to the scene, according to Williams.

Jefferson was taken to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, where he died Monday afternoon, Jones said.

“He had multiple burn wounds and smoke inhalation,” Jones told The Telegraph

The house was covered in soot and the open-air carport was destroyed after the incident.

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department did not immediately respond to The Telegraph’s request for comment.
