Macon Water Authority board member announces cancer diagnosis, plans to keep serving

Elaine Lucas, a board member with the Macon Water Authority representing District 1, announced during Thursday’s meeting that she has leukemia.

Following the meeting’s adjournment, Lucas addressed her fellow board members and her constituents and announced her diagnosis.

Lucas said she plans to keep serving on MWA’s board as she undergoes treatment.

“My commitment to this community is as strong as it’s ever been,” Lucas said during her announcement. “I will continue to work on behalf of citizens until the day I am no longer here.”

Lucas has served as an MWA board member since she was sworn in in November 2024. She previously served on the Macon-Bibb County Commission for 12 years, and served another 25 years on the Macon City Council, which was Macon’s governing body before the city and county consolidated in 2014.
